Workshops & Excursions

The list below contains all of the tours and events that you can take part in at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre. Please read through this page to the end in order to see our full range of activities!

1. Excursion in the Ukrainian Cultural Centre: St. Hildegard’s Courtyard, Labora workshops, our Smithy and Grusbeke Tower
   During the tour we will open the door to history and listen to interesting stories and legends from our corner of Ukraine in the Old Town of Tallinn; you will take a look at life in the UCC and what fuels the workshops. In addition, we will visit an exhibition of mechanical toys in our Grusbeke Tower, which showcases some parts of our mechanical Moral Theater. The tour is led by the founder of the center, Anatoli Ljutjuk.
   • Duration: up to 1.5 hours.

3. Workshop: “Ukrainian Kitchen”. 
   During the workshop “Ukrainian cuisine”, we will not only offer you the chance to taste but also to prepare Ukrainian meals yourself. The menu includes baked potatoes, salted herring, Ukrainian borscht and the traditional Ukrainian drink uzvar. We will talk about the uniqueness and diversity of Ukrainian cuisine and also let you in on some kitchen secrets.
   • Duration: up to 2 hours.
   • Price: 12 euros per participant.
    

4. Papermaking, Calligraphy and Print 
   Each of these techniques is an art in its own right, so we offer you workshops in single techniques as well as a joint workshop where you can acquire and practice skills in all three of these areas. The price of the workshops varies from 50 euros to 200 euros. Please see the detailed description below.
    

5. Our rooms can also be rented. Organise your own event or spend time with friends at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre. Rent: 60 euros per hour.

 

Workshops

Papermaking

During the papermaking workshop, you will learn how to make paper using traditional methods. You will spend time in our active papermaking workshop, where you dip your hands directly into the pulp and make your own paper. The paper dries in just one hour; in the meantime you can experiment in our scriptorium with calligraphic writing techniques using a pen and ink.

Seed Paper

During the workshop, you will learn how to make traditional seed paper that can later be planted. You will spend time in our active papermaking workshop, dipping your hands into pulp and making your own paper. You can pop back to collect the dried paper after three days. In addition, you have the opportunity to spend time in our scriptorium, where you can experiment with calligraphic writing techniques using pen and ink.

Seed Bombs

Guerilla gardening is one way to spruce up a dull cityscape. So get your hands messy with some paper pulp and make seedbombs. Keep them at home to closely watch how flax grows, or throw them in a grey spot you’d like to see blooming in a few months.

Calligraphy

Come to our cosy scriptorium to explore the fascinating world of calligraphy. Tatiana will introduce you to the fragile beauty of calligraphy lines and show you how to use a pointed nib pen. You will try your hand at Copperplate, one of the most beautiful calligraphy scripts with an elegant and harmonic flow.

Papermaking, Calligraphy and Print

Get the most of your visit to our workshops, learn papermaking, calligraphy and printing all at once in just a few hours. You will spend 1,5 hours training your hand in calligraphy and then take a break to make your own paper and print greeting cards.

Perfect for those who love sending cards to their friends. Get together and create personalised greeting cards. Send us a design to print ahead or use one of ours. Print it in our letterpress workshop and then use your newly-gained calligraphy skills to write greetings inside. We can even provide you with envelopes and stamps, and post your cards for you!

Easter Egg Decorating

Decorating eggs is one of the customs of Easter in Ukraine. This unique tradition has survived from ancient times and is still alive today. We offer you the opportunity to discover Ukrainian culture through this workshop, where your real egg – põsanka – will be decorated. You will learn how to use and combine colours along with the meaning of the symbols used. Practice draw with a põsachok (a specific tool for decorating eggs), and listen to the Ukrainian music that accompanies a traditional egg-decorating evening.
